How to chat without a phone number

Most messaging apps make your phone number your identity. That means anyone you chat with gets your number, losing your SIM can lock you out, and you can't easily keep separate accounts for work, family or online communities. JawaChat takes a different approach: your identity is a username you choose, protected by encryption keys that are created on your own device.
Open the JawaChat web app, pick a username and a password, and share @yourname. That's it — no phone number, no email, no download required.
1. Create an account with a username and password
Open jawachat.com/app in any modern browser on your phone or computer. On Create account, type the username you want (for example @honey) and a password of at least 10 characters. JawaChat checks that the username is free and creates your account in a few seconds.
Your account is stored only on that device, encrypted with your password. There's no JawaChat server holding a copy, which is why nobody — not even the developers — can read your messages or reset your password.
2. Share your @username so friends can find you
Friends start a chat by typing your username. You can also share your short profile link jawachat.com/@yourname, or show the QR code in your profile so someone nearby can scan it. It works like sharing an Instagram handle instead of a phone number.
3. Accept or deny message requests
When someone you haven't accepted sends you a message or tries to call, it lands in Message requests at the top of your chats. They can't see whether you've read it. Tap Accept to start chatting, Deny to delete the request, or Block to stop them from contacting you again. You can review and unblock people later in Settings.
4. Chat, share photos and make video calls
Messages, photos, voice notes and group chats are end-to-end encrypted before they leave your device. Photos are re-encoded so hidden location data (GPS/EXIF) is removed. 5. Back up your account to use it on another device
Because your account lives only on your device, save a backup: open your profile and download the encrypted backup file or copy your recovery key. On a new phone or computer, choose Sign in → Import backup (or Recovery key) to bring your account over. Keep the recovery key private — anyone who has it can use your identity.
Why a username is more private than a phone number
- You don't hand out personal details. A phone number can be linked to your name, address and other accounts. A username reveals only what you choose.
- No SIM-swap takeovers. Your account is protected by keys on your device, not by a text message a mobile carrier can redirect.
- Separate identities are easy. Make one account for friends and another for an online community without buying a second SIM.
- You decide who can reach you. Message requests keep strangers out of your chats until you say yes.
Honest limitations
JawaChat is an actively developed prototype and hasn't had an independent security audit yet, so don't rely on it for emergencies or high-risk situations. Can I use a messenger without a phone number?
Yes. JawaChat accounts are created with just a username and a password. No phone number, SIM card or email address is asked for at any point.
How do people find me without a phone number?
Share your @username, your short link (jawachat.com/@yourname) or the QR code from your profile. People type your username in JawaChat to start a chat.
Can strangers message me?
Messages and calls from people you haven't accepted go to Message requests. Nothing opens a chat or rings until you tap Accept, and you can deny or block anyone.
Where is my account stored?
Only on the device where you created it, encrypted with your password. There is no account server. Save a backup file or recovery key to use the same account on another device.
What happens if I forget my password?
Nobody can reset it, because JawaChat never has it. You can restore your account with your recovery key and set a new password, so keep the recovery key somewhere safe.
